Freedman Center
Language Learning Services

Overview

Language Learning Services represents the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the College of Arts & Sciences in the Samuel B. and Marian K. Freedman Digital Library, Language Learning, and Multimedia Services Center, the culmination of a ten-year vision for a center in the Kelvin Smith Library that provides faculty, students, and staff with the ability to utilize both analog and hardcopy information sources in digital works and presentations.

Mission

The mission of Language Learning Services is to use technology creatively to enrich the language learning experiences of students, faculty and staff at Case, and to provide exciting and innovative opportunities for strengthening the global awareness of the Case community.

Vision

We as humans live in a world in which the distance between people and places is every day becoming smaller, in which boundaries are crumbling and cultures are flowing into one another. Life in such a world requires movement away from tribal provincialism towards a wider knowledge and embracing of the cultures and countries with whom we share our lives, much of which comes through a knowledge of language and its many spoken, written and otherwise recorded manifestations.

Language Learning Services will help the Case community in the challenging endeavor that is learning a foreign language by:
  • Aiding faculty members of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in using technology to enhance their students' classroom experience;
  • Creating innovative applications allowing students to get the most out of their out-of-class learning time;
  • Providing resources for the entire Case community to engage in self-directed language learning;
  • Providing collections of foreign media to foster an awareness of global and cultural diversity, and to demonstrate the fun and enjoyment to be had in language learning;
  • Developing opportunities and forming partnerships for the purposes of exploring new ways to use technology to support teaching, research and learning.
